Chimney repair and maintenance is a must in Connecticut as it is known for its unpredictable weather, but is an often forgotten home maintenance item.  Chimney repairs are important not only for preventing chimney fires. but also to assess wear to the chimney.

Homeowners in Southeastern Connecticut and Rhode Island often wait to perform chimney repairs after the water begins to enter the interior of the home, often inside the walls, through leaks in the chimney.

Don’t wait!

Chimneys can last a long time, but only if they are properly maintained. They are exposed to the elements 365 days a year. Over time the mortar and even the bricks wear down. Eventually, the resulting chimney leaks can cause serious damage to your home.

Being in business for over four decades has given Consolini Masonry the experience and expertise to not only assess your situation. Consolini then offers you your best options and appropriate course of action.

Don’t trust an amateur to inspect and repair your chimney.

Trust your chimney maintenance and repair to the experts at Consolini Masonry!

Chimney Crown Repair

A chimney crown is an essential part of the chimney because it acts as a shield and first line of defense against weather-related deterioration. The crown is built on top of the chimney and designed so water can easily run off, instead of collecting on top. Water will eventually cause the chimney to deteriorate since it is a natural solvent. Another sign that there might be a problem is if you have unpleasant odors coming from your chimney during the air conditioning season. Crowns do not last forever and need to be repaired or replaced once they start to crack or deteriorate. The crown acts to reduce water damage and will lengthen the life of your chimney.

Tuckpointing

Tuckpointing is a way of using two contrasting colors of mortar in the mortar joints of brickwork, with one color matching the bricks themselves. The process creates the illusion of very fine joints within the wall.

Chimney Pointing and Repointing

Over time, weathering and decay cause voids in the joints between masonry units, usually in bricks, allowing the undesirable entrance of water. Pointing or Repointing is the process of renewing the pointing, which is the external part of mortar joints, in masonry construction.

Chimney Flashing

Chimney flashing can allow roof leaks in the transition area between the chimney and the roofing materials.  Is it a roofing problem, or a leak caused by deteriorated brick or mortar. Is faulty flashing embedded in the masonry? Any such leaks can be quite frustrating for most to diagnose. They cost the homeowner serious money due to heat loss, water leakage, and problems that moisture causes.  Consolini’s expertise and decades of experience with chimneys allow them to quickly diagnose and fix your problem.

Brick Matching

When repairing or adding to a masonry structure, you want the new area to look just like the pre-existing masonry. The two main components of brick matching are color and size. Having matched bricks is important because if you can't find new bricks that are the same color, texture, and size, your new brickwork will look out of place or sloppy. This, in turn, can negatively affect the value of your property.  Being in business as long as Consolini Masonry has, and having amassed such a wide network of suppliers and contacts throughout New England, gives them a real advantage as they can always find the right materials for your project.

Caulking Your Chimney

Individual chimney bricks that have a small crack or two can be repaired with a high-heat mortar and a caulking gun. Caulking is also used to help seal a chimney, lengthens the existing chimney structures life and delays needing to do any expensive repairs. Small repairs now can save you big money in the future!

Chimney Covers, Tops and Caps

The chimney cap acts as a hat to help prevent rain, snow, birds, small animals, bugs, and debris from entering your home through your chimney. These creatures and debris can clog the flue and prevent the escape of dangerous fumes from a burning fireplace that can expose occupants in your home to dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide.

Also, uncapped chimneys increase the risk of fire. With the right weather conditions, burning embers from the fireplace can be sucked through the chimney landing on your roof and starting a fire. The force of a downdraft from an exposed flue can blast open fireplace doors pushing smoke, soot, and ash into the room.

There are multiple options on what type of cap to install on your chimney, which vary based on how they attach to your chimney.  There are also options regarding the materials and shape of your cap, including rectangular, square, or round, which may depend on the style of your chimney.
